Students in the Genetics Training Program are ordinarily admitted through the Biology Graduate Program, Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program, or Neurosciences Graduate Program, each of which serves a diverse set of research interests. As part of their graduate training, students from each program conduct laboratory rotations in a variety of laboratories, including laboratories headed by Genetics Training Program faculty. Students who join laboratories affiliated with the Genetics Training Program may be nominated to the Genetics Training Program by their faculty mentors based on their previous academic merit, research performance, and the training relevance of the student's chosen research problem to the Genetics Training Program. Students in appropriate areas of Bioengineering, Bioinformatics or Public Health Epidemiology are also welcome to apply. The Genetics Training Program generally appoints and begins training students in the Fall of the second year of graduate study, after completion of standard core requirements in the first year of the Biology, Biomedical Sciences, or Neuroscience Graduate Program. Students spend most (3 years) of their time in graduate school as Genetics trainees, resulting in strong identification with this program. They retain a dual affiliation with the Biology, Biomedical Science, or Neurosciences Graduate Program, and elective coursework can be used to simultaneously satisfy requirements of both the program of origin and the Genetics Training Program.
