The Genetics Training Program faculty are drawn primarily from the UCSD Division of Biological Sciences, UCSD School of Medicine, and The Salk Institute. All are active investigators with research and training interests in Genetics. These interests run the gamut from classical and molecular genetics focused on basic science questions to clinical genetics focused on medical or translational problems in humans. Research includes a wide variety of experimental organisms including Arabidopsis, Caenorhabditis, Danio, Drosophila, Homo, Mus, Saccharomyces, Schizosaccharomyces, and several prokaryotic species. Our faculty are internationally recognized as leaders in Genetics and have been widely honored. Several members of the training faculty enjoy the support and affiliation of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research or the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Twelve have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences. All are dedicated to training the next generation of outstanding scientists with a focus on Genetics. Our faculty is committed to creating an interactive and cohesive environment in which science and student training prosper, and creative endeavor flourishes.

The training program is based on the idea that rapid progress in both clinical and basic science is enhanced by exposure to both of these disciplines. Thus, our faculty not only includes basic scientists, but others with strong clinical interests and those with appointments in Medicine, Neurosciences, Pathology, Pharmacology, and Pediatrics. In addition, research in several of these departments is conducted with the view that the best basic scientific research profits from being exposed to the needs of the clinical setting. Sustaining this idea, several of our faculty retain clinical practices and clinical teaching responsibilities; many have exposure in their home departments to clinical needs.
